How can you tell if a pet's stool consistency is optimal?

A fecal score chart categorizes stools based on their appearance and consistency ranging from 1 (very dry and hard stools/constipation) to 5 (watery diarrhea). 

As a veterinarian, using a fecal score chart is an objective way for you to ask pet owners to describe the consistency of their pet's stools, which they sometimes find difficult to describe, and also to monitor progress and response to treatment.
