Dr Sally Perea of Royal Canin discusses the importance of diet history in pet nutrition and managing GI issues.

What is your typical approach to collecting a thorough diet history?

When discussing diet history with pet owners whose pets have gastrointestinal issues, it’s crucial to ask open-ended questions. Rather than asking, ""What type of food do you feed your dog?"" which can yield a simple ""yes"" or ""no"" response, try, “Tell me about how you feed your pet throughout the day.” This encourages clients to share detailed information about their feeding routines and allows you to gather more insight. It’s also important to revisit these questions with long-term patients at each consultation. Diets and feeding practices often change over time, even if they initially align with your recommendations.
