Nutritional recommendation and diet transition

Nutrition plays a crucial role in the overall cat and dog’s health and well-being. When introducing a new diet, as a veterinarian, it's important to ensure a smooth and gradual transition to prevent issues like diet refusal or digestive disturbances. Supporting pet owners through this transition is crucial to help them adhere to dietary recommendations and achieve the best results.
This chart outlines a step-by-step approach to incorporating the new diet gradually while phasing out the old one, ensuring the pet adapts comfortably to the new food. A standard diet transition typically takes about a week:
- Days 1 & 2: 75% current food + 25% new food
- Days 3 & 4: 50% current food + 50% new food
- Days 5 & 6: 25% current food + 75% new food
- Day 7 onwards: 100% new food
However this recommendation should be adjusted based on the pet’s appetite (fussier eaters may require a longer period) and any underlying health conditions. For example, pets with chronic kidney disease or those on weight loss diets, which have specific nutritional profiles, may benefit from a slower transition lasting 10 to 15 days.
